Things to do during the festive period… indoors
If like most of the UK the government restrictions have spoiled your December festivities, we’ve thought of some innovative and creative ways to bring the fun indoors. Even if you’re low on cash and resources, these budget-friendly, easy activities can we enjoyed by individuals or families. It is your chance to add some last-minute sparkle to a very dark year!
Have a movie night
It’s simple, its classic, it’s easy. There is nothing better than a festive movie night during winter. Like most people, you’ve probably watched the entire contents of Netflix twice since lockdown started in late March. But that’s not to say you can’t make your next movie night extra special by picking up some treats! Whether you’re on your own, with your family or snuggling up with a partner, set the mood by dimming the lights, igniting some candles and making sure the room is nice and toasty. Make or buy your favourite foods, including movie night staples such as popcorn on sweets. Tuck up under a duvet cover, put on your pyjamas and get comfy. There’s nothing better.
Make a den
Was there anything better than making a den as a kid? Definitely not- so if you have a family, why not get your spare sheets and pillows out of the cupboard and build your very own winter teepee? It’s a great way to get the kids involved and it’s totally free! You could even throw some festive hot chocolates into the mix and make it even cosier!

Bring the pantomime to your home
Kids or not, a trip to the pantomime is one the best festive activities out there. But thanks to government restrictions, most pantomimes across the country have been cancelled this year- but that doesn’t mean you can’t bring it home. The Big Panto Guide is offering a whole host of virtual pantomime shows throughout December that can be purchased and streamed at home for as little as £10 per family or completely free. If you have some cash to spare, why not enjoy your favourite pantomime production in the comfort of your own home?
Recreate the Christmas Markets
If 2020 wasn’t bad enough already, it’s dealt yet another devastating blow- the Christmas markets have been cancelled (well, most of them anyway). Arctic temperatures or not, there’s something so exciting and charming about wrapping up in a scarf and gloves and dotting between stalls/ German beer houses. But instead of writing them off completely, bring the stalls to your home. If you have the time and resources, create some stall signs using cardboard or paper and stick them on the walls of different rooms across your home. Buy or make some typical market snacks (such as Bratwursts, waffles and beer/ mulled wine) and distribute them across your stalls. If you want to make it extra cosy, dangle some fairy lights and turn off the lights. You could even open the windows to make it chilly and authentic…
