The furlough scheme – what’s changing from July?
Last edited 25th June
As you probably know, the furlough scheme is staying in place until the end of October. But there will be a few changes between now and then. And with so many announcements coming out all the time, it can be difficult to keep up. So we’ve put together the main things you need to know.
From July, you may be able to go back to work part-time
Your employer will be able to bring you back to work on a part-time basis, and then furlough you for the rest of the time. Here’s how that’s going to work:
- Your employer can bring you back for any amount of time or any shift pattern, and is allowed to vary your hours each week.
- Your employer will have to pay your normal wage for any hours that you are in work.
- For the hours you’re not working, you’ll be covered by furlough pay, so you’ll get at least 80% of your normal wage.
From August, your employer will have to start contributing to your furlough pay
In August, the government will continue to pay 80% of your salary as before, but your employer will have to start paying your National Insurance contributions, and your pension contributions if any.
From September, your employer will have to start contributing to your salary as well:
- In September the government will pay 70% of your salary, up to a maximum of £2190.
- In October they will pay 60%, up to a maximum of £1875.
- Your employer will have to top up the rest, to at least £2500 or 80% of your total salary, whichever is lower.
- As is the case now, your employer will have the option to top up your pay to £100 if they are able to do so.
This means you should continue to be paid the same as you have during the furlough scheme so far. So in theory, the changes to furlough shouldn’t affect you.
However, if your employer finds it financially difficult to pay some or all of your salary, your job could be at risk. If you’re concerned that you might be made laid off, have a look at our blog about redundancy.
