Your kids’ new school timetable

As a child, there were certain subjects at school that I just didn’t do well in. I think we can all relate. I remember I wasn’t bad at Maths until they introduced the B times table. When letters got involved, I was lost forever.

I might have stood a better chance if Carol Vordemann had been my Maths teacher. Science would have been much more interesting if Professor Brain Cox was taking the class.

Well, that crazy dream can now be a reality. During lockdown, leading experts from their field are giving classes to help children keep on top of their schoolwork while the schools are closed.

Here’s what your childrens’ new timetable could look like:

9am – P.E. with The Body Coach Joe Wicks

This is a great way to start the day. Get the blood flowing to your kids’ brains before class begins.

Every morning at 9am, Joe Wicks is streaming a live fitness class. He is also posting the recording of the class on his Youtube channel if you can’t make 9am.

10am – Maths with Carol Vordemann

The Maths Factor is a website created by the former Countdown host and all-round brainbox Carol Vordemann. Usually there is a £2 per week fee; however, during the Coronavirus lockdown the courses are free. The courses cater for ages 4-11.

11am – Science with Professor Brian Cox

The Cosmic Shambles Network (great name) is a Youtube Channel that is hosting a Stay at Home Festival. Every day they are posting live streams. It is hosted by Rob Ince and there are several special guests including Professor Brain Cox.

The guests discuss many different topics including answering viewers questions, such as this one from nine year old Marcus: ‘I would like to teleport to school everyday, how do I go about doing that?

Lunchtime

If you need any inspiration for lunch, Jamie Oliver has your covered. There are loads of ideas on the Jamie Oliver website that the kids can help you with.

1pm – History with Sean Bean, Dan Snow and others

History Hit is a subscription service; however, they do give you 30 days for free before the monthly charges begin. Just make sure you unsubscribe before the 30 days is up if you don’t want to continue with their service.

They have many videos available, including videos for Key Stage 3,4 and 5.

2pm – Computer Science

It seems all the young billionaires these days know how to code. From Elon Musk to Mark Zuckerberg, coding is a skill that is likely to give your child a job for life.

Code.org is designed for 5 – 13 year olds and is a fun way for children to start to learn about Computer Science.

3pm – Music with Mylene Klass

Mylene Klass has started to post music classes every day on her Youtube channel. Get your children inspired by music and help them to learn the basics. For more advanced classes, just search Youtube, there are hundreds of content creators with music classes for all kinds of instruments.

Switching up your timetable

There are lots of other classes your kids can take, too. You’ll want to change things up to keep things fresh and exciting. You might want to consider some of these other lessons that are available:

Geography with Steve Backshall

Art with Pete McKee

Creative Writing with children’s author Eloise Williams

For your older kids, there are 50 free revision resources for 11+, GCSEs and A-Levels
