We’ll give you free, impartial advice on a way to start becoming debt free.

If MAP is your chosen solution, we’ll recommend you contact Citizens Advice. They’ll discuss this option further and provide the application form.

Is a Minimal Asset Process right for me?

How it helps
You will not need to make any payments to your lenders for six months.
Your lenders are not allowed to contact you or chase you for payment.
The debt included in the MAP is written off after six months if your situation doesn’t improve.
Things to consider
If your situation improves during the six months of the MAP, you will move into sequestration.
Details of your MAP will be added to the Register of Insolvencies.
Your credit rating will be impacted for six years.
Restrictions will apply for a further six months after the MAP has completed.

Answers to common Minimal Asset Process questions

What if my circumstances improve?

If your circumstances improve, you may be subject to the full sequestration (Scottish version of bankruptcy) process and you could be required to make monthly payments towards your debts.

Which debts are not included?

There are certain debts that you will need to keep paying. These include: any court fines, student loans or child maintenance arrears.

Are my creditors still allowed to contact me?

Creditors are legally not allowed to contact you once your MAP has been approved.
