Feed Your Family Of 4 For Less

According to the Office of National Statistics, the average UK family- of- four spend £4,960 every year on food shopping, excluding alcoholic drinks. That is £413.30 every month, and £207 every fortnight- a lot of money to part with during a national recession, wouldn’t you agree? As the British economy deteriorates and job losses continue to rise, protecting your money is more important than ever, and cutting back on your food bill is a simple and effective way of lowering your monthly outgoings.

A recent survey by Which? found that as of July 2020, Aldi is the cheapest supermarket in the UK. Based on this information, we’ve complied at 14-Day Budget Food Plan which could slash the price of your family shop to just £115 a fortnight- an average saving of almost £92.

How to use the plan

The first thing to say is, take it with a pinch of salt (see what we did there). This is your plan – you can adjust it to suit you. If there’s something you don’t like on the food plan, swap it out for something that you do. Once you’re happy with it, print it off and stick it on your fridge.

Keep in mind, we’ve put this together to get you thinking about your food budget. A lot of people spend more on food than they do on rent, so understanding what you are spending is essential to managing your household budget.

All that being said, please click the picture below to check out our 14 day food plan. Hopefully this will provide some inspiration when it comes to starting your own food plan, and will help you save you some cash, too. If you manage to save yourself some money, why not tell us about it on social media, we’d love to hear from you.

How to shop

You’ve probably heard this before, but shop with a plan. Make a list of what you need and stick to it. If you don’t, what tends to happen is you overspend and waste a lot of food.

Most supermarkets have apps that list how much items cost. That way you can know exactly how much you’re going to spend before you go.

Cooking & Prepping your meals

Some of you might be amazing in the kitchen, others might be microwave masters. No matter what your level, cooking doesn’t have to be a chore. There are so many easy recipes out there that don’t take long to prepare plus, cooking from scratch is so much healthier and cheaper!

In our food plan, we’ve put together lots of easy recipes for you to follow. As we’ve mentioned, feel free to switch these around. Maybe you’re a visual learner and you see a recipe on Youtube that’s easier for you to follow – that’s great. The key is to know what you’re spending.

If you are looking for some inspiration try looking at the following places:

  • BBC Good Food guide – we’d especially recommend their slow cooker recipe book. Just throw ingredients into the slow cooker, leave them a few hours and hey presto!
  • Youtube – There are so many good recipes here you can’t go wrong. You can even see how the chef does it which makes it really easy to follow along.
  • Delish – A vast library of cheap, easy recipes that are easy to follow.
