Looking for work

If you’ve been laid off or are otherwise out of work right now, finding a new job might be a daunting prospect. So we’ve rounded up some of the best places to find job opportunities, plus all the help and advice you need.

Where to look for work

Jobs created in response to coronavirus

Many sectors have sadly seen staff laid off, given reduced hours or put on furlough. But some kinds of jobs in the UK are more in demand than ever.

You can find a whole range of jobs related to food – from farm work to delivery driving – at feedthenation.co.uk/#services.

And NHS jobs created in response to the pandemic can be found on the NHS Jobs website.

All jobs

  • You can find thousands of jobs on the government’s website at uk/find-a-job. Your local council’s website may also have job listings for your area. Some councils are even conducting virtual careers fairs.
  • Check the websites of local and national newspapers.
  • You can find a list of recruitment agencies on the Recruitment & Employment Confederation This includes agencies that can help you look for work matching your particular sector or skill set.
  • If you graduated from university within the last few years, get in touch with their careers service.

Advice on job-hunting during the pandemic

If it’s your first time looking for jobs in a while, you might need to brush up on your skills. And maybe even learn some new ones!

If you’re new to jobhunting online, learnmyway.com can help you find your way around. And if it’s time to refresh your CV, you can find an online CV builder on the National Careers Service website. You can build a bilingual CV on Careers Wales.

Job interviews can be stressful at the best of times, and social distancing adds extra challenges. If you’ve never taken part in an interview by phone or video before, it’s a good idea to be prepared. For advice, check out Prospects and the US-based advice blog Ask A Manager.

Financial support while you’re looking for work

Use our benefits calculator to make sure you’re getting all the help you’re entitled to. Depending on your circumstances, you might also be able to get a financial grant to tide you over. Take a look at the turn2us website.
